- **Decryption:** in server memory only, during a verification or sync, to call the provider's billing endpoint. Never persisted in plaintext.
- **Operator access:** no admin or support screen in the application can display a stored credential. Anyone holding the deployment ENCRYPTION_KEY *and* database access could decrypt outside the app — that capability exists and is stated plainly rather than denied. Every in-app decryption writes an audit record the account owner can read at Dashboard → Settings → Security and export as CSV. Server-side retention for that log is 90 days (pruned weekly); the CSV is how a user keeps a longer record.
- **OAuth:** used where providers offer it — Google Cloud and Azure via service principals minting short-lived OAuth 2.0 tokens, AWS via a scoped IAM user. OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, xAI and Cursor publish no OAuth flow for billing reads, so TryTokka requests the narrowest read-only admin key each offers.
